Cellulite is largely a genetic phenomenon, and how much you have is primarily influenced by what you inherit. However, many nutritionists agree that you can help fight off cellulite and improve its appearance through what you eat and the kind of lifestyle you lead. In addition to exercising regularly with a regimen that balances cardio activity and weight training, you can include certain foods in a healthy diet that will help combat cellulite.

Water

Hydration is vital for maintaining healthy skin, and healthy skin helps camouflage fat cells that manifest themselves as cellulite. Cellulite cells are rounded and bumpy, so they appear prominent beneath dehydrated, dry or weak skin. Drinking water throughout the day and eating a variety of foods that have a naturally high moisture content can help your skin plump up and stay hydrated, which will mask the appearance of any cellulite you have. High-moisture foods that are effective at delivering fluid to the body and adding vitamins and minerals in the package include cantaloupe, watermelon, grapes, cucumbers and leafy greens.

Healthy Fats

Foods that are rich in healthful, monounsaturated fats build strong skin cells and help the body successfully slough off dead cells. Foods with healthy fats that strengthen skin and can smooth its appearance include avocados, almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, canola oil, olive oil, and even dark chocolate (the darker, the better). As with all fatty foods, these items should be enjoyed in moderation and in small servings.

Fiber

Herbal nutritionist and doctor Linda Page notes that getting enough fiber in your diet is an important tool in fighting cellulite. Fiber helps the body absorb as many nutrients, vitamins, and minerals from other healthful foods as possible, and it couples with a healthy fluid intake to keep skin hydrated and keep the digestive system running smoothly. Good sources of fiber are: fruits such as pears, raspberries, apples, bananas, figs and raisins; and whole grains such as whole-wheat pasta, barley, bran, and oatmeal; legumes, beans, nuts and seeds.

Plant-Based Proteins

Registered dietitian Cynthia Sass says that natural, plant-based proteins are helpful in fighting cellulite because they aid the body in strengthening existing cells and building muscle instead of fat. She recommends including foods such as beans, legumes, lentils, quinoa and bulgur in your diet.
