Underneath the skin, the fat is held within a network of collagen fibers. Some of these collagen bands grow upwards and attach to the underside of the skin. These collagen fibrous bands (thin and weak attachments) cause the cellulitic cottage cheese wavy skin appearance and collagen fibrous cords (thick and strong attachments) pull down on the skin causing the dimpled hill and valley type of cellulite appearance, which is usually seen on the thighs and buttocks. This is why even thin people have cellulite. With increased weight, the fat cells in between these collagen bands tend to become plumper and bulge. With further changes in the body, as the muscle tone decreases, and the skin becomes looser, gravity pulls the skin down and the collagen bands pull on the skin from underneath and cause the skin to look more dimpled.
